Internet and The Old Port

Yesterday, both Manon and I were just about to start meetings over the internet, when my notebook started throwing server not found errors.

Down in the data closet, the modem’s lights were all dark, except for the one, sad blinking “trying to sync” indicator. A call to our ISP confirmed that there was an “unregistered outage” — which meant they couldn’t give us an ETA for repairs.

Later, when I took a walk down our local ruelle, I saw a tech from a different network provider pulling blade servers out of the service cabinet high on a pole. But internet didn’t come back until this morning, and we had to spend the night huddling ’round a fire and telling ghost stories (or, as the case may be, reading chapters out loud from Martin Chuzzlewit).

Now that the internet’s back, here are some pictures from Vieux-Port du MontrĂ©al, taken over the weekend. It was a pleasant, warm day. On the treelined quay leading to the clocktower, the flowering trees were shedding petals like a gentle white rain. Later, a brief and intense downpour of real rain sent everyone scurrying for shelter.
