Historical Re-enactment

It’s been a busy end-of-Summer. We’ve had some visits from out of town, and work has been taking up a lot of time.

A few weeks ago, Manon and I managed to get away to the Pointe-à-Callière 18th Century Public Market event.

While this event ostensibly recreates a typical market in Montreal’s early days, it’s more an occasion for demonstrations of historical techniques, music, and crafts … and cosplay.

For what it’s worth, the promotional material claims that both French and Indigenous traditions would be represented. When we attended two years ago, I remember a demonstration of canoe-making, but this year I didn’t see anything I could interpret as “Indigenous.”

Regardless of historical accuracy, it was a fun event to photograph. Some of the craft demonstrations were interesting:

Bowl turning
Lace-making
Lace-making (detail)
Stone carving
Yarn-spinning
Wickerwork

There was lots and lots of music!

There was a lot of soldiering, too.

But, beyond that, there was a lot of happy posing for pictures.
