Ottawa

As Manon’s mentioned, we spent a couple of days poking around the Ottawa area.

Our experience of Ottawa-Gatineau was significantly different than our quotidian Montréal experience, in part because we rented a car. This freed us to go further afield and experience the sprawl.

Like Montréal, the greater metropolitan area extends across a large geographic area (Ottawa-Gatineau being some 30% larger at roughly 6,300 square kilometers / 2,4oo square miles). Like other metropolitan areas built around canyons or waterways, the geography can be confusing: a location can be close by as the Canada Goose flies, but a half hour drive away even without traffic.

We didn’t have a chance to try Ottawa’s public transportation. The light rail infrastructure gets a lot of grief on the Ottawa’s Reddit page, but other people have told us the bus system is rather good.

Our brief visit was divided between looking at various neighborhoods and assessing them for “livability” and doing the tourist thing. The collection of photos below are mostly from the later activity and admiring the autumn leaves.

What’s a sundog? I looked with my pariedolic eyes, but couldn’t find it, so… what’s a sundog?

It’s a colloquial term for a parhelion (brighter spot on a solar halo). They often appear in pairs, one on each side of the sun. Sometimes, if you’re extremely lucky, you get multiple solar halos and each one will have parhelia.
