Truffettes of France
Cocoa Truffles Dusted with Maple Sugar
Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Okay, here comes the good news: these cocoa truffles with a maple sugar dusting by Trufettes of France are phenomenally delicious.
This is from an eater who doesn’t like chocolate truffles usually; I find most of them have a greasy mouth-feel and are unappetizing in the flavor department (looking at you, Lindt).
But Trufettes truffles are not a chocolate shell enrobing a squirt of oily filling; they have no hard coating, and are more like a little lump of firm fudge. The dusting of maple sugar gives them a slight crunch, and the chocolate taste is intense with a coffee-like finish.
Now the bad news: when I say “little,” I mean little. The packaging, with its iconic red sugar shack on the front, is deceptively large; within you’ll find a smaller gold foil packet that only takes up a quarter of the box.

Booooooooo.
But good news again: these truffles are so chocolate-y and satisfying that a little goes a long way, and surely Trufettes would not want you to eat yourself sick on a large quantity of such rich candy; thus the packaging feels less like a rip-off and more like a consumer protection measure. Thanks, Trufettes!
Bad news again: to qualify for a Maple Report analysis, a product must contain real maple products, which these truffles do. However, they also contain artificial flavorings (“natural” though they may be, bah humbug) and this makes me less of a fan.
Flavorings are not only unhealthy but they can cause immune reactions in some people; they also feel like cheating. And–yeah, I see it, you don’t have to point and yell–saturated fat is the first ingredient. Conceded: these are a health hazard no matter how you look at them.

But to be fair: the flavors and the fats, real and otherwise, are skillfully blended. These Canadian-made chocolates are undeniably more-ish and I’d recommend them to those who want to throw dietary caution to the wind and enjoy a small but intense and mapley chocolate experience.
