Summer Snow

It has been blazingly hot this week, and yet there’s snow:

No, Hell hasn’t frozen over. These floaty bits are part of the seed release strategy for the eastern cottonwood.

Each tree can release 40 million seeds per season, so even a few cottonwoods can create quite a show. We must have several on our block, judging from the output. The photo above is a branch that Sylvain brought in from the street in front of our apartment.

I find the floating fluff enchanting, but I’m indoors so don’t suffer for it. Cyclists and pedestrians hate it because it clogs one’s face and nose while one is out and about.

It’s kinda romantic though. Makes me think of this scene from “Fantasia”:
