Look Sharp!

It’s a summery day in Montreal, and this morning during my coffee break I heard the tinny digital chimes of what I presumed was an ice cream truck coming down our street. I stepped outside to look because I wanted to see what a Quebecois ice cream truck looked like; Montreal is known for its ice cream game.

But I was surprised to see this truck instead:

The Sharpening Truck!

Le camion d’aiguisage! The knife-sharpening truck!

It turned off its chimes and stopped at the end of the block, and sure enough someone ran out of their plex with a box of chef knives and handed them to the driver.

Who knew? In our California neighborhood, you can sometimes take knives to be sharpened at the local farmer’s market, but nothing like this.

Does anyone else have a sharpening truck in their hood? Is this a uniquely Quebec thing?

If only they sold ice cream, too. Coulda made a killing.

We have knife sharpening trucks here in NYC too! Neighbors send out texts to let people know when they are in the neighborhood.

All we have here are taco trucks, but I wonder if you brought your knives to one of those pop-up grill stands that sell Latin American shawarma they’d sharpen them for you? They seem to be well-equipped with sharp knives for shaving off the meat and must need to hone them often. An additional revenue stream for them!
